Missionary Social Group

Once each month our missionary social group gets together for some kind of an event - almost always with a delicious pot luck dinner. These are some of the missionary couples that came into the Family & Church History Mission together with us in September 2009.
     Tonight we had a 'fireside' and dinner at the Brigham Apt. Social Room and our guest speaker was Herbert Klopfer. He shared the story of his escape from Communist East Germany right after the War. He, his mother and younger brother eventually immigrated to Salt Lake and, outside his mission to Switzerland when he was 19 years old, has lived here ever since.
     Brother Klopfer has been on the Church Music Committee for 27 years (1983 thru today) and, with his wife Carolyn, wrote Hymn #298 which is now published in every hymnal published in English and every other language that it has been translated into. He voluntarily plays the piano during lunch in the cafeteria of the Church Office Building almost every day.....and he uses no music, everything from memory. He supervises over 100 other volunteers who audition to play pianos in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and the Convention Center - his wife being one of those selected by the audition committee.

Hyatts Visit Salt Lake

Jim, Corky and Mike Hyatt dropped in to see us during their annual genealogy research trip from their home near Kansas City, KS to the Family History Library. Bill and Jim were in the Jaycees together and have stayed in touch through JC friends, reunions and fishing trips. We interrupted their research time just enough to have lunch twice and and a quick tour of the interpretation floor. We are planning to have dinner at the Lion House Pantry on Monday evening. Bill might even sneak in some library time with them too.

Provo Trip

This morning we got up early and headed south to Provo. Our Cantonese interpretation team invited us to join them during their training session and to partake of some authentic Chinese food - absolutely delicious.
    After the training session we drove over to the Provo Temple - right across from the MTC where we were just three months ago - and enjoyed a session. It had been closed over the Christmas holidays for cleaning so it was really busy today.
     What's a trip to Provo if you don't stop by the BYU Creamery for a burger and a great big scoop of the world's best ice cream?!! As we ate the ice cream in the truck we watched all the young men and women scurring about their college life - how many memories that brought back to us. Wow, how long ago were we right there?!
     As you can see, it is still winter in this neck of the woods and there's is no let up in the forecast. I'm ready for spring!!
